I stood at a bus stop past the end of the day
A blood-red Routemaster pulled up into the bay
I handed my fare to an unseen face
I look at my ticket, this must be the wrong place
I try to get off so I ring the bell
But there’s no returns and the next stop’s Hell
Now I ride this ghost bus to the end of the line
I will ride it alone until the end of time
It waits forever at a red traffic light
It’s a bus route that only runs at night
This bus never stops, no one else gets on
The ride is lonely and the ride is long
I’ve bought myself a ticket that never gets checked
There’s just me and the driver no one to inspect
It’s colder on this bus than it was outdoors
And there’s chicken bones all over the floor
I can’t see out the windows but there’s nothing to see
There is standing room only but the seats are all free
We pull into the depot at the gates of Hell
There’s a strong smell of diesel and of sulphur as well
I guess this is the place that I need to get off
But the windows are misted and the doors are locked
Even on this bus drivers need to retire
I didn’t apply for it but I’m the new hire
Now I drive this ghost bus to the end of the line
I will drive this ghost bus to the end of time
I drive it past bus stops where nobody waits
I drive it past bus stops where it’s always late
But one day somebody will put out their hand
And get a one-way ticket that won’t go where they planned
He, who drives the ghost bus
He, who drives the ghost bus
He, who drives the ghost bus
He, who drives the ghost bus
